Log Home Design Ideas May 2003 "The Best of Both Worlds"
While Jim and Cathy Smith wanted their log home to have a mountain pioneer feel, they didn’t want to sacrifice modern comforts. To create that ambiance amidst the trappings of modern life,
decorators Carolyn Ragan and Robin Helms of Carolyn Ragan Interiors chose themes that reflect a bygone era and married them with cozy furniture. “The furnishings are a combination of traditional and comfortable,” Helms says. “The cabin feel comes through in the choice of fixtures, rugs and other accessories.” The Smiths insisted on low-lying furniture that doesn’t obstruct the lake view. “You won’t find any high-backed chairs or armoires here,” Jim says. Sprinkled throughout the house are various antiques the couple already owned. They also requested that local craftsmen build much of the home’s cabinetry, furniture pieces and accessories to create a unique, authentic look. The great room features a hunting theme, complete with antique guns and maps. A specially-crafted chandelier over the dining room table features Georgia wildlife native to the mountain area, including bears and deer. And rare lanterns from England adorn the fireplace mantel, adding to the rustic theme.
The décor in each of the four bedrooms also represents a theme, from grandma’s room with its frilly bedspread and hat collection to mallard and fish items in the sportsman’s room. A local carpenter created the twig bed in another bedroom while the pottery collection in the kitchen comes from yet another local artist. Ragan and Helms selected all the exterior lighting especially for the Smiths. “The owners wanted to see a lighted house from the lake,” Ragan says. “It’s really a beautiful effect looking from the lake to the house at night.” READ MORE
